Water is supplied from the Michigan Flat and Wild Horse Aquifers which are a part of the West Texas Bolsons Aquifer. The Culberson County Groundwater Conservation District predicts that in 2050 the Wild Horse Aquifer and Michigan Flat Aquifer will have 1,680,000 acre feet of freshwater in storage and 1,155,000 acre feet of slightly saline water in storage.

Natural recharge occurring in the Wild Horse & Michigan Flat aquifers is estimated to be 3,700 acre feet per year assuming average rainfall of 11 inches.

Van Horn is located in the southwest part of Culberson County, Texas, 120 miles east of El Paso, Texas and 185 miles southwest of Midland, Texas. Top agriculture commodities in the Van Horn area include irrigated cotton, wheat, sorghum, alfalfa, peanuts, cabbage, onions, carrots, peppers, potatoes, pecans, and cattle.

Van Horn has an average annual rainfall of 12 inches, which occurs typically from June to October.
